A collaboration between two visual artists - Glasgow-based Ally Wallace and Lincolnshire-based David Carruthers - resulting in a collection of short animated films about architecture and the built environment. The artists normally work independently of each other - in drawing, sculpture, photography and video - but have collaborated on this project to concentrate on the architecture related animated films that each has recently been making - dealing with a range of subjects from education buildings and public art to the relationship between landscape, shelter and inner self.

Sacred Vessels consists of 52 model water towers made from matchsticks. The models are three-dimensional recreations of water towers photographed by renowned artists, Hilla and Bernd Becher. These have been painstakingly recreated by measuring their monochromatic photographs in their MIT publication ‘Wassertürme’.

The work pays homage to the late Bechers, and to this unique building type, using the rigorous medium of the matchstick hobbyist. The title alludes to the sacred properties often attributed to water, to its essential role for life on earth and to the growing importance its availability will play in shaping global affairs.

The Reuse Showhome is an opportunity for residents to view a new build home fitted entirely with reused and repaired furniture and furnishings. It demonstrates that beautiful and comfortable home interiors can be achieved on a small budget, in small spaces with minimal environmental impact. The exhibition at Quay Community Improvements shares the life stories of reused and repaired items. Some items will be available to purchase. 

Zero Waste Leith is a project delivered by Changeworks, funded by Zero Waste Scotland and the European Regional Development Fund and supported by Leith community partners working to create cleaner, greener streets.

Custom Lane and GRAS will work with Custom Lane residents and members of the wider creative community to design and build an experimental, temporary structure within the Custom Lane courtyard, responding to the theme Common Senses. The new structure will perform a variety of functions but, most significantly, will be designed to encourage regular use of the recently reclaimed public space. Where possible, found materials will be used and all materials will be capable of future re-use or recycling.

In architecture and public life we now take certain typologies for granted; in terms of how they look, how they operate and how they are used. We recognise a house as being different from a library and a leisure centre as being distinct from a farm.

During last year’s Architecture Fringe we examined the visual language of our civic infrastructure through a commissioned exhibition called New Typologies. For this year’s programme, through the commissioning of five emerging practices, we seek to explore how hybrid typology at personal and local level can be developed to address current and projected societal issues.

The status-quo for architecture in Scotland is dead. It’s time for change and change is happening. A new chapter is beginning, but what’s the story? What do we want for the profession? And how are we going to do it?

Crumble’s method revolves around creation through discussion; the Crumble Magazine Project will involve open discussion and collaborative creation, leading to a ‘magazine wall’ full of ideas all in a single afternoon! The theme of our latest issue is ‘Conflict/Resolution’: how does conflict manifest on a local, national and international level and how do we even start resolving it? The afternoon’s challenge will be shaping these ideas into paragraphs, poems, doodles and illustrations, which we can bring together for reflection and consideration at the end of the day.

SituLab will perform and exhibit their ongoing project into how the public respond to modern architectural heritage through in-situ musical compositions and experiential, digital souvenirs. The composition and souvenirs (limited edition 3D printed models and digitally printed badges) are all directly inspired by the architectural elements of Craigsbank.

The public are invited to visit the space, hear the music, interact with and collect their own souvenir and to reflect on how they feel about their surroundings. These emotive reactions will form part of the research group’s continuing interest in embedding personal narrative and sentiment into site-specific musical compositions and souvenirs.

The project reflects on the contemporary image of the new town in the public imagination and seeks to collaborate with local people to develop solutions to current challenges.

The focus is knowledge dissemination by engaging families and interested parties. This will occur by a reflecting on the past experience and developing new solutions for the area that residents and the wider community could be inspired in becoming active agents of change. Through using architecture and design methods as the driver towards an enriched experience of the towns.

A series of walking tours that focus on earlier housing developments and the Penthouse area have been organised. There are also a series of prepared family events and a collaboration with local schools.

Architext investigates the relationship between playwriting and architecture. Ahead of the Citizens Theatre’s imminent redevelopment, memories and experiences of the theatre building have been gathered from over 60 participants. These stories have been assembled into a play script which takes the form of architectural plan of the building. Lines denoting walls and staircases are replaced with lines of dialogue that pertain to each specific space. In this way, these architexts function as blueprints for both the tangible and intangible elements of this iconic building.

Part of an AHRC funded Practice-as-Research PhD at the University of Glasgow.

Living The Dream is a video work which features the former studio of Bernat Klein designed by Peter Womersley. The building remains in private ownership and stands surplus to requirement. In spite of, or because of the decay the structure has developed an aura of timelessness, a stillness that belies its productive past. This past conjures a collision of art and capitalism, foregrounding ideas around the division of labour, the construction of femininity and the individualism of the artist. I explore the building’s structure within it’s natural site, juxtaposing 70s fashion images and imagining a future without domestication and waged labour.

Our scenic live land sculpture is a vibrant reminder to connect to nature in our ever changing developing city landscape.

Charles Eames’ quote underpinned their philosophy that design has the potential to enhance people’s everyday lives and effect it in unquantifiable ways.

Hoskins Architects have a preoccupation with creating architecture that is emotive and impacts the senses. To the practice a building is never a mere container, it is a device that brings people together and makes connections to its wider surroundings to create spaces which are deeply rooted in their place.

This group show features the work of friends, collaborators and architects from the practice, exploring this theme in a variety of different mediums.

The exhibition takes place at a former clay tobacco pipe factory built in 1877 which until recently was vacant and in a state of disrepair. Now inhabited, the building is going through a process of ongoing transformation into exhibition and studio spaces.

Found by the Forge shipping containers, which are situated on brownfield land along the Union canal and opposite Papa John’s pizza on Dundee street.

The Baby Pianodrome is the full-scale prototype of the final Pianodrome. It shares a brownfield site with its sister project, the Forge, a community makerspace based in shipping containers. Run in partnership with the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, the final Pianodrome will be a playable 100-seater amphitheatre built entirely from 50 disused pianos. It is at once an interactive sculpture, acoustic concert venue, workshop space, lecture theatre and playground. This radical re-imagining of what the piano is and can be in today's throw away culture turns instruments that have been condemned to the rubbish tip into something new and astonishing.

The Messenger by Hilary Jack comprises four site-specific works in the landscape, made in response to the rich history of Mellerstain House, its architecture and the fascinating characters who lived there. From a bold, large-scale neon text piece overlooking the lake, and a looming look out tower from which smoke gently rises, to Hermes’ long-missing caduceus playfully replaced with an anomalous staff, this exhibition draws out hidden histories and weaves in a commentary on contemporary events.

The University of Edinburgh is investing £1.5 billion in buildings over the coming decade. Through its existing holdings, redevelopment projects and ongoing acquisitions, the University’s opaque bureaucracies are dictating the aesthetic and spatial trajectory of our shared environment. Bear Makes is a design practice set up by architect and maker Anna Wynne.

Anna invites to Drumsyniebeg Farm near Lochgoilhead, to watch her carve a spoon out of local timber. Whilst carving Anna will talk through the process of timber sourcing and selection and highlight the hand tools and techniques used to ensure that each spoon is beautiful, durable and designed for purpose.

Participants will be encouraged to try spoon carving, talk timber detailing and to explore the recently renovated Bear Makes studio.

Everybody senses the common world differently. In a plural society the built environment can often be found to only reflect a narrow, defined, representation of that society. Through the sharing of individual experiences we’ll explore access, diversity and equality to move beyond token and unsatisfactory gestures within our surroundings; to create a more reflective, complex, challenging and engaging built environment.

The event will include a 10min walk around Custom Lane, which features a variety of different surfaces such as cobbles. Please wear appropriate foot wear.

Contributors at this event include:

Clare Archibald

Clare is a writer interested in the interplay of forms and the potential of collaboration and in ideas of place, loss, choice, movement and vocal expression. She is also exploring women’s ideas on, and experiences of, aloneness, darkness and wilderness via her Lone Women in Flashes of Wilderness project. Most recently she curated an event in relation to this collaborative project as part of the Not Quite Light 2018 festival in Salford. Clare is currently finishing her work of experimental nonfiction, The Absolution of Shyness. She can be found at: clarearchibald.com

Thea McMillan

Architect and Design Director of Chambers Mcmillan Architects, a practice specialising in accessible architecture. Architect of the award winning Ramp House in Portobello, designed to give a wheelchair user the chance to experience moving around space differently, in an inclusive and equitable way.

Dele Adeyemo

Dele Adeyemo is an architect, researcher and urbanist conducting a PhD at the Centre for Research Architecture at Goldsmiths, University of London. His creative practice mobilises the beauty of Blackness and being as a method of decolonising approaches to architecture and placemaking for the enrichment of all lives in our cities. 

Dr David Simmons

David is a Lecturer in Psychology and a specialist in the measurement of sensory stress. His recent research has revealed that, although autistic individuals are seriously affected by sensory stress, a considerable proportion of the general population seem also to have issues, thus justifying a demand for environmental adjustments.

In 2016, a collective of architects and artists formed with a common sense that our communities are frustrated and feel an ennui concerning issues around change to the built environment. We set out to address this cultural lack of confidence by investigating how to help empower our younger generations through engagement with a wide spectrum of relevant issues and concerns.

We have been in contact with relevant parties including: Education Scotland, A+D, HES, EWHT, Scottish Futures Trust, BEFS, Edinburgh CC and Play Scotland. Discussions are in progress to establish which guest speakers are available and relevant to the Summit.

The 2018 Summit will hear three independent perspectives and experiences before open discussion on the band new 'Archischools Manifesto' which will be presented on the evening. Speakers include:

A continuation of our previous work; our first project (’A Sonic Palimpsest’ Architecture Fringe 2016) created a musical score and representation of Edinburgh’s urban fringe generated by the city itself (L). The second (‘Spatial Synesthesia’ Architecture Fringe 2017) explored sound and representation via a single building within the city (S).

In Scotland, scatterings of small informally planned townships, perhaps best described by the Gaelic word ‘clachan’, once supported vibrant communities with a rich heritage and culture across much of the mountainous highlands. However this now sparsely populated landscape has become commonly regarded as a romanticised ‘wilderness’. By studying the clachan as a typology, might its characteristics be reinterpreted in order to inform and legitimise future resettlement?

3x3 is a conversation between nine people from various creative backgrounds where all communication is carried out through sketching. Each day, each person will draw a sketch in response to a given phrase and forward their sketch to the next person who will use it as the basis and inspiration for their next sketch. This workshop aspires to explore how the city of Glasgow is being perceived by its residents and visitors with sensory impairments.

A route will be established in collaboration with an association and disposable cameras will be distributed to a group of people with visual/perceptual difficulties. Their sensory experience through Glasgow will be recorded and later presented in the form of photographic exhibition to the wider public, visually representing a physical engagement with the city.

To conclude, a conversation about how we can achieve a safer and more inclusive environment will be held on the experience and findings from ‘seeing’ Glasgow through ‘feeling’.

Pecha Kucha (Japanese for chit-chat) is a great fun idea started in Tokyo in 2003 by architects – Mark Dytham and Astrid Klein of Klein Dytham architecture. It has gone viral and is now happening in over 1000 cities around the globe and has been running in EDI since 2007.

Each presenter is allowed 20 images shown for 20 seconds each - 6 minutes 40 seconds run time- before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show. Chill during the interval and afterwards, enjoy the buzz of creativity.

To engage with the Biennale Architettura 2018, Venice, and to celebrate Scotland’s Year of Young People (YOYP), The Happenstance, is an exploration of how young people in Scotland respond to the Biennale theme of Freespace. Using play as an active agent within the process of rethinking and reclaiming Freespace within the built environment, in Venice this was presented as a Living Library of Ideas, focussing on the event nature of live situations – exploring how we can intervene in our own lives and the circumstances that shape us.

For the Architecture Fringe the core structure in Venice will be presented and activated with a night of film screenings that showcase the work of The Happenstance team in Scotland and in Venice.

An exhibition demonstrating the research and practice of children’s creative workshops, and how they are used to structure and inform the design process, and create participatory spaces.

The Yard Dundee is a live, ongoing project, actively involving disabled children in creative workshops, which inform and develop the design process for an inclusive indoor outdoor play centre, supporting and enabling disabled children and young people, and demonstrating how inclusion makes the built environment richer for all.

The Ramp House is a living example of both inclusive spaces and a participatory design process, and will provide a place to consider this further.

Façades/Fronts is a commission for Look Again Visual Art & Design Festival in partnership with Citymoves Dancy Agency that takes the ‘Year of Young People’ as a starting point and draws upon the architecture of Aberdeen, using the façade as a metaphor to explore the forming of one's own identity, particularly as a woman. A group of young women will perform a perambulatory work together, placing their bodies in contrast to the imposing granite facades that have historically housed patriarchal civic activity. The work will be based in the city centre (beginning at The Anatomy Rooms).

An important part of recycling is the reuse of narrative and memory. This can be extended to the reuse of idea, where thoughts, memories, emo- tions and physical possibilities can be kept alive, stolen, passed on and reinvented. Through a series of three interlinked workshops spread over the course of a short day we will explore the premise of repurposing, re- search how ideas are created and do we have a right to copy. Merging the thoughts generated from the workshop together with physical walks in close proximity to the venue we will create an ideas map. Our map from the workshop will form part of the Scottish Ecological Design Asso- ciation’s (SEDA) Expedition Series and be developed by graphic artists 'Designers on the Run'. The ideas map will be published on SEDA’s website for download by the general public.

Our workshop will be held at Collective Architecture’s office which is centrally located at Glasgow Cross and the walks will include Barrow- land, Glasgow Green, Glasgow Necropolis, Glasgow Cathedral, the Mer- chant City, Bridgeton Library and the Glasgow Women’s Library. After the workshop the project will be further developed through the Decon Hub an organisation dedicated to the circular economy and supported by Zero Waste Scotland and the Construction Scotland Innovation Centre.

Through an intensive week we aim to turn talk into action by testing ideas in public space. Each year we inhabit a building or site and learn through engaging with ideas, materials, people and place.

The project is based in Speirs Locks, an area linked to the canal in north Glasgow. It is a post-industrial area close to (but in many ways separate from) the city centre. Since its industrial decline it has gone through significant change. The latest masterplan, which included large-scale building works and huge capital investment, didn’t materialise after the economic crash of 2008. Since then an alternative approach has been developed, placing cultural activity, alternative use and temporary activation at the heart of the regeneration process.

Maryhill Pedal Power is a cycling initiative to promote the remake culture in Maryhill along the Forth and Clyde Canal. It aims to engage children, youth and families with utility cycling as a means of everyday healthy transport, waste collection and outdoor sport. It links everyday stories built around the world of cycling, energy and waste promoting the use of bicycles creatively. To become a member is easy. Participants will enter friendly inductions, workshops and competitions getting rewards. It counts with the support of National Lottery Awards for All Scotland, SportScotland and Creative Scotland and powered by Studio Pop and partner organisations. This initiative is held at the DOT TO DOT Maryhill Station www.dots.scot to develop a creative and inclusive outdoor programme, which is part of the remake framework REPLASTICO Energizing (Re)cycling led by Studio Pop.

Maryhill Pedal Power team invites all participants to ideate, build and play together, converting KCal to Kw; and learning about remaking. In doing so, we will design and experiment with DIY bike trailers and locally assembled cargo bikes that will be used to collect plastic waste along the Canal, creating new products made with reused plastics. The events are:

They engage with distinctive themes around (re)cycling culture, including night screening excursions and competitions along the Canal. Initiated by a group of Architecture graduates from across Scotland with an interest in publishing and the recording of the built form, the Open Architectural Report is a publication which will value individual voices and perspectives on the built environment, with each edition addressing one particular subject.

Launching on Tuesday the 19th of June, this first, special, Architecture Fringe edition will look in depth at a typology dispersed on the fringes of the two major cities, Edinburgh and Glasgow – the industrial shed. Contextualising the current, analysing the past, critiquing the proposed and projecting alternate interpretations for some particular examples.

To create inclusive cities it is important to seek involvement from people who will be affected by design decisions, strategic thinking and processes of ‘regeneration’. This has lead to community consultation becoming central to the development of urban projects.

However, as new business models have arisen around community consultation have we now reached a point of saturation whereby engagement, consultation and participation is used to produce activity, without producing change?

What are the key power dynamics currently at play, and how can we better support the agency of communities?

Does design through collective or consensual decision making undermine the design process? Can we no longer trust the instinct of design professionals? Are these things mutually exclusive?

What is the quality and utility of knowledge obtained through consultation and engagement? Do these processes extract resource (time, energy, commitment) from local communities – instead of empower them?

Pecha Kucha is a simple idea – 20 images for 20 seconds each making talks that last just 6:40mins.  In this format we will hear from artists, designers, architects, planners, community workers and members of communities to unpack various approaches to engagement and have a open and lively discussion.

Documentary film, She Draws: She Builds, is directed by Sarah Akigbogun, with Anna Schabel and Chloe Tayali. This film shows edited interviews with fifteen architects over a period of about three months in 2016. They asked questions about initial decisions to study architecture, their practice as architects today. This project has many synergies with Voices of Experience: Architecture in Conversation, and for this first Scottish showing of the film, we host a panel of guests, including the filmmakers, historian Diane Watters, Architects For Change members Elsie Owusu and Selasi Setufe on broader examples of women ‘creators’ in the historic built environment, to explore how ‘She Makes: She Changes’.

It’s time to cash in for art schools. Yay! Exponentially increase the number of fee-paying students. Develop more courses with innovation in the title. Place schools at the heart of new cultural regeneration projects. To get an art design or architecture teaching job you need a PhD, to get a PhD you need to pay the institution you’re going to work for. The loop is complete. Bloody great.

As education becomes the product, the objectives of HE institutions have silently shifted – to focus on business growth, efficiency and remaining competitive in the open marketplace of higher education.

Arts education is a process enhanced through generosity, experimentation and critique – fundamentally underpinned by the relationship between creativity and the taking of risks. This is at direct odds with the business model it exists within.

Is it not time to recognise that the institutional art school is dead and new models need to emerge?

It allows and encourages audience and panel to speak candidly and polemically without fear of offending. Canadian artist, writer, and rock musician Josh Thorpe responds to the former steel shed exhibition space know as DOK in Edinburgh’s Leith district. Thorpe uses unassuming materials such as thread, paper, rubbish, or drips of paint to play with space, light, and our perception of the material world. The exhibition Vibrant Shed will be invented for the DOK space. It is likely that the lights will be dimmed and the door will be opened to let in the natural light and the breeze.

Combining the 21st Century technology of the App Uber, with Situationist philosophy from the 1950’s, two worlds collide to create an experience that will have you reconsidering traversing the City of Edinburgh. In his study Paris et l’agglomération parisienne (1952) Chombart de Lauwe notes that “an urban neighborhood is determined not only by geographical and economic factors, but also by the image that its inhabitants and those of other neighborhoods have of it.”

In this experimental project, you will participate in sharing your ‘images’ of the city through the telling of stories in conversation, as you interact with the cityscape in an Uber cab where you know not your destination. Your participation to this experience shall be documented through words collected and recorded online during the experience and after, to enable a co-collaboratively constructed reaction to manifest in the form of a poem; The song of the Uber Dérive.

The Shieling Project is an off-grid learning centre based in Glen Strathfarrar, near Beauly in the Highlands. The tradition of the shieling - the summer pastures and huts where young people used to graze cattle - gives us a window onto the past, but also helps us look forward to a sustainable future.

Our 6 new bothies were designed, fabricated and fitted by North Woods Construction (Leckmelm, by Ullapool). Making use of solar gain and local timber, our bothies bring the shieling into a future where hutting is once again part of the season's round.

Come along to our open day, learn more about our project through talks and demonstrations and try your hand at turf building. Food and childrens' activities on offer.

Following a hugely successful first tour in 2016, Shore 2 Shore is returning for Independent Bookshop Week 2018 and the final stop on this UK tour will be celebrating Bookpoint Dunoon at Dunoon Burgh Hall.

This fantastic event will feature live poetry readings from Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy; Scotland's Makar, Jackie Kay; the National Poet of Wales, Gillian Clarke; Queen's Gold Medal winning poet, Imtiaz Dharker, along with local Dunoon poet Tariq Latif and musical MC John Sampson. Before reaching Dunoon, the tour will have crossed the UK to visit and perform in nine independent bookshops, joined at each one by a local poet.

Alice Rawsthorn is an award-winning design critic and the author of the critically acclaimed books, Hello World: Where Design Meets Life and Design as an Attitude. Her weekly design column for The New York Times was syndicated worldwide for over a decade. Alice speaks on design at important global events including TED and the World Economic Forum in Davos. Born in Manchester and based in London, Alice is chair of the boards of trustees at Chisenhale Gallery in London, the contemporary dance group Michael Clark Company and The Hepworth Wakefield in Yorkshire. A founding member of the Writers for Liberty campaign to champion human rights and freedoms, Alice has been awarded an OBE for services to design and the arts.

Jacqueline Donachie is an award-winning Scottish artist. Based in Glasgow she has forged an international reputation for a socially-engaged art practice that is rooted in an exploration of individual, family and collective identity and the structures, platforms and spaces (both actual and conceptual) through which it is constructed and supported. Her work encompasses sculpture, installations, photographs, films, drawings and performance and is research-based, collaborative and participatory.

Her recent gallery exhibitions include ‘Deep in The Heart of Your Brain’ at the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow (2016), an exhibition that drew wide praise for the manner in which it addressed disability, inheritance and ageing, and Right Here Among Them (2017), a mid-career survey show at the Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh that was the recipient of the inaugural Freelands Award. She holds a PhD from Northumbria University that examined the capacity for artworks to influence research and care in the field of genetics, continuing a long collaborative engagement with biomedical researchers in both Newcastle and Glasgow.

Donachie also creates public, site-specific projects and publishes artists’ books, with recent public commissions from NPRO, Oslo, Norway; Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne and Edinburgh Art Festival. In 2014 she completed New Weather Coming, a major new work as part of GENERATION, 25 years of Contemporary Art in Scotland, and Glasgow Slow Down, a public event for the XXth Commonwealth Games Cultural Programme.

Stephanie Macdonald co-founded 6a architects with Tom Emerson in 2001. She studied fine art at Portsmouth College of Art and following a scholarship to Japan, architecture at the Mackintosh School of Architecture, the Royal College of Art and London Metropolitan University with Caruso St John. She has been instrumental in developing the practice’s collaborative approach working with consultants, artists, designers and scientists and has lectured with artists and on 6a’s work internationally. Stephanine will explore our COMMON/SENSES theme through the world of architecture.
