As part of the People and Places programme, Lateral North will host 'Leithitorium', a workshop focused on the lack of a live music venue within Leith.

Over the day attendees will have the chance to develop conceptual ideas for a range of local spaces, leading to a further 'Archihack' in August, when the ideas generated will be developed into a full project. This workshop, however, will act as an ideas kickstarter and create a variety of opportunities for the local community as a result.

Responding to the overarching question 'how to make Leith a better place to live', a broad range of community partners, creatively minded or not, are invited to attend alongside architects, artists and designers.

‘All Signs Point To’ explores the semiotics of recognisable public infrastructure. The work will deconstruct everyday urban objects and reconstructs them using their core base elements, abstracting them from the public realm. Focusing on literal street signage, a way of directing the flow of everyday life, the work will be an aesthetic celebration of some of the cities most banal objects. It is a somewhat playful but deconstructive take, removing them from the realm of public space and reconstructing them within the context of the gallery, questioning the nature and function of the objects versus the function of an ‘Art Object’.

This show will be in preparation for an exhibition as part of Edinburgh Art Festival.

An exhibition exploring independent architectural publishing activity in Scotland, as well as interesting practice from further afield.

By creating a reading room of critical writing and publishing, using examples from the past and present, and from student projects to studio output, academic initiatives to independent commercial publishing, we ask how critical discourse might be supported in Scotland.

Rediscovering half-remembered or forgotten voices, publications and manifestos, the exhibition will seek to deepen the collective memory of past architectural culture. Through reflection and discussion the exhibition will enable stock to be taken of where we are now and what we could learn or re-learn for future publishing and critique.

The future that we invite you to imagine is from tomorrow to the year 2042, and no further. New Typologies asks you to consider how our shared civic infrastructure will exist in the future, if at all.

How will our town halls, public parks, sports facilities, schools, community centres and libraries function and what will they look like? Perhaps the future of a given typology is a hybrid. Perhaps the typology in question is nearing redundancy, with new alternative methods of engagement or existence required. Perhaps there are clues in the past for a given typology’s future..

How are buildings discussed by the public, and where does this differ from architects? How adrift in views, perception and taste are trained and non-trained. Is there common ground, or are we to forever speak a different language?

During Archifringe, Agile City will be exhibiting the outcomes of this years Test Unit project, which takes place from 18–24 June.

About Test Unit:

Conceived and developed by Agile City / TAKTAL, in partnership with A Feral Studio and BAXENDALE, Test Unit is an art, design, architecture summer school & events programme which aims to:        

-Prototype ideas in public space to inform urban development
-Build capacity to initiate grass-roots projects
-Place culture, people and education at the heart of regeneration

Despite only being approximately 6 miles at its widest point, Belfast has almost 20 miles of peace lines, walls and other structures that divide its two largest communities. The first such structure was built 45 years ago, shortly after the beginning of a conflict that has killed over 3500 people and injured in excess of 50,000 men, woman and children. So why, despite a peace process that was agreed almost 20 years ago, do these structures still exist throughout Northern Ireland's capital city.

For the past two years, John Irvine has been photographing these interface areas and their surrounding geography. The purpose of this photographic journey was not just to educate, but to provoke thought and conversation in others that weren't aware of their existence.

A party wall is a structure that stands on the boundary between two properties and is shared by both owners. As buildings are demolished and rebuilt it is often easier, from a legal and construction standpoint, to maintain the party wall that exists between the two properties whilst constructing the new building immediately adjacent to it. Over time, as the city evolves, residual traces of buildings long-demolished survive almost unnoticed with the streetscape.

The project seeks to find and reveal these structures. The photographs are produced to draw the observers's attention to the sometime subtle composition of constructed elements which constitute the city around them. Often the accumulated history of a place, its patina if you like, is erased through (re)development. Fragments of that history, however, sometimes remain.

The photographs present the subject matter as found, offering the observer an identified view not necessarily seen.

The project transfers to the Architecture Fringe direct from exhibition in London as part of the London Festival of Architecture.

An exhibition of drawings and models by 4th Year ESALA students were asked to speculate on possible uses for the currently derelict site of the Edinburgh Tramway Depot situated between Leith Walk and Easter Road.

The students contributed to the production of 4 alternative masterplans for this area that combine living accommodation and associated facilities for a particular protagonist and within a particular theme. It is hoped that this exhibition will contribute to a wider dialogue about the way in which we might use the vacant and ‘lost’ spaces within the city to address contemporary concerns.

Generally speaking Infrastructure is associated with facilities and systems that are essential for our everyday living and which everyone takes for granted. It refers to physical structures and facilities such as roads, bridges, public transport network, buildings, water supply, electrical grids, and telecommunications. We have been so accustomed to them that we can’t even imagine life without them.

As (landscape) architects, engineers, designers or artists these systems are often part of our work. We design them, amend them, incorporate them. As part of the People and Places programme, Biomorphis will co-curate an exhibition of ‘Leith Listings’, a new directory for the Leith neighbourhood identifying local buildings, structures, people and places of special architectural or historical interest.

During the event, GoogleEarth street view, snap shots and printed images will be accessioned, adding to the list and building up the collection. At the same time, out on the streets of Leith, facilitators from HERE+NOW will be engaging passers-by, identifying the parts of Leith's streetscape which people love and want to see incorporated into the live evolving list.

The building of the New Town allowed the city to introduce infrastructure such as greenspace, lighting, piped water and sewage in a planned manner. The work is a collection of observations along the main railway line connecting two major cities in the Wallonia Region of Belgium, starting in Liege and ending in the provincial capital of Namur. Focusing on the topographical changes around the post industrial Landscape of the Wallonia region, the work centres on an area that has seen major changes to its social and economic infrastructure.

The future that we invite you to imagine is from tomorrow to the year 2042, and no further. New Typologies asks you to consider how our shared civic infrastructure will exist in the future, if at all.

How will our town halls, public parks, sports facilities, schools, community centres and libraries function and what will they look like? Perhaps the future of a given typology is a hybrid. Perhaps the typology in question is nearing redundancy, with new alternative methods of engagement or existence required. Perhaps there are clues in the past for a given typology’s future..

As part of the People and Places programme, HERE+NOW will be taking a giant mobile ‘Place Standard’ tool on a tour of Leith.

Rolling through the streets, pausing at strategic locations along the way, the spinning wheel offers a live invitation to contribute, using chalk from passers-by to slowly build up a picture of what people think about Leith.

The wheel will be supporting Curated Conversations at Out of the Blue, on the 7 July, followed by additional tours of the area. It will then be at St Margaret’s House, on the 12 July, where you are invited to join HERE+NOW in person for a celebration of Place.

The Wheel-on-Tour can also be seen on 19 July 12-2pm at various touring locations.

Located between Leith’s Custom House and its stable block, lies a cobbled lane connecting the Leith Market to the shores of the water of Leith. Inaccessible to the public for over forty years, the gates to the lane were opened in late 2016, providing a forecourt and access to Leith’s new public centre for design and making, Custom Lane.

A series of design and build workshops focused on the adaptive re-use of the lane space would transform the space from an underutilised transitional space to a civic space, accessible to a broad demographic of users and host to a variety of events linked to the Custom Lane and Custom House community groups.

Edinburgh Printmakers are delighted to welcome Page \ Park Architects to discuss their ongoing projects and their role within the development of Castle Mill Works, Edinburgh Printmakers’ new home in 2019.

During this talk, they will reflect on the 3 approaches they use in their work with historic buildings, giving some examples from the previous experience.

The first involves careful surgery to the existing fabric and stitching back together – realised at the CCA, McManus Galleries and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. The second approach includes the attachment of new onto the old as a ‘battery pack’, examples include The Lighthouse, Rosslyn Chapel Visitor Centre, Theatre Royal and St Cecilia’s Hall. The third approach is a hybrid, explored at Castle Mill Works in Fountainbridge.

We will share their journey through the historic analysis of the site at the former NBRC Headquarters through to their vision for the new facility.

A continuation, in part, of the themes explored during the Architecture Fringe 2016 - spatial, architectural, demographic, historical representations and re-imaginings through the inhabitation of sound.

Previously we took a route through the outskirts of the city, allowing it to create its own score. This time, we focus on a smaller, integral element within the city. From the XL to the XS, (although) both part of the same system.

The last remaining building of the Henry Rob Shipyard in Leith, the DOK art space was originally designed and built using shipbuilding techniques as a plan store. Fire proof and bomb proof, it stored all the plans for every ship that was built by the yard throughout the war. In later life it was converted to a paint store before being relocated to its present location as the shipyard was demolished. It remains the last vestige of 660 years of ship building in Leith. 

The re-inhabitation of the building as artist studios and gallery space, the unique structure of the building itself, the history of the shipyard, the traces of the people who lived and worked there, and the ships they built, will form the parametric elements of the representations, re-imaginations and spatial synesthesia.

Two films of the trilogy 'Love City Jalalabad’ and ‘Snow Monkey’ have been shown at major festivals such as IDFA in Amsterdam and Sheffield in the UK and have won Awards including the NY Film Festival, Salem FF (US) and Bologna in Italy and have been finalists in major festivals like Asia Pacific, Sydney, Melbourne and various in Scandinavia and Europe.

He throws himself into the clash of fundamentalism and entertainment – virtual and real – in this off-beat docu-drama mix. Gittoes takes us on a surprising, terrifying journey, into the forbidden zones of Pakistan’s explosive North West Frontier. Is it a documentary or is this ‘war art’?

With monkey, ‘Dali’ he stuns the villagers with balloons and fun, children squealing with delight, Gittoes defy’s the Taliban who can only watch on as the children are left spell bound. Amir Shah Talash marries for love, the 19yr old Neha Ali Kahn becomes the first Pashtun woman to make a film, Arshad Kahn the 3ft ‘petite’ comic genius, makes his international debut. Gittoes goes right into the heart of darkness and finds gold!

The series paints a portrait of a Jalalabad seething with humanity, adversity and hope – focusing three gangs of children: the Ghostbusters, persecuted Koochi boys who hawk exorcisms of bad luck and demons; the Snow Monkeys, who sell ice cream to support their families; and the Gangsters, a razor gang led by a nine-year-old antihero called Steel.

‘XXX’ is a series of three temporary art installations by Steve Messam in the historic gardens of Mellerstain House.

The large-scale architectural interventions explore their sense of space, presence and place - each one working with the environment to temporarily disrupt it and transform the way they are viewed and perceived.

Mellerstain House is a rare complete Robert Adam building and the historical significance of the Reginald Blomfield redesigned gardens make Mellerstain a true architectural gem. ‘XXX’ draws on that architectural significance - both in the use use of historical buildings and the designed landscape.

The Lighthouse in Glasgow has invited Recoat to curate an exhibition to celebrate their 10th anniversary. Forty Scottish and international artists and designers will exhibit a broad range of creative practices, from architecture to digital art to painting. The exhibition and programme of workshops, panel discussions and screenings aim to encourage dialogue around contemporary design and art practice and the blurring of these genres.

The project will be officially launched on July 15th 2017 with an engagement workshop creating a platform for locals to get involved and share their stories about Possilpark.

From the folklore of the shielings, mountain bothies and shepherd’s huts of the past to the revitalisation of the tradition of hutting in Scotland today, this event will include short informative talks with guest speakers and floor spots from invited musicians and performers.

Speakers include Lesley Riddoch on Scotland's missing wood cabins and ethnologist Hugh Cheape of Sabhal Mòr Ostaig on the folklore of bothy culture in Scots and Gaelic culture.

Abriachan Forest is one of the largest community-owned forests in Scotland set high above the shores of Loch Ness. The forest, purchased in 1998, is managed by Abriachan Forest Trust (AFT) who work to encourage recreational and educational use of the forest.

Northscape, based at the Old School House in Abriachan, is a new company that designs, manufactures and constructs contemporary small-scale ecological huts. Discover the story of this magical place, visit the new Northscape forest hut and learn more about what you need to consider if you are planning a hut build.

Short talks and demonstrations will take place in the AFT forest classroom throughout the afternoon with members of Abriachan Forest Trust, Sam Hesling of Northscape, consultant ecologist Dr Emily Hesling and members of Reforesting Scotland’s ‘A Thousand Huts Campaign'.

Creative Riot was born from a need to use creativity as a force for good amongst those who may not have been lucky enough to have such an opportunity.

From November 2015-October 2016, Jassy Earl documented the journey of Pollokshields Playhouse, through photographs and video.

Initiated to generate discussion about the form of public spaces within our community, Pollokshields Playhouse was a grassroots project that sought to connect people with under-used public space. Through the temporary animation of a redundant and derelict site the provided a unique opportunity for testing new possibilities for the future of Pollokshields and Port Eglington.

Redhall Walled Garden is a beautiful 18th century walled garden that offers a safe environment for people to learn to deal with the challenges of recovering from enduring mental health problems.

The organic, community garden and surrounding estate provide individuals with direct connections to nature and a social support structure that is conducive to mental and physical well-being. A guided tour of the garden and estate will be followed by workshop activities focused on the design of a new teaching kitchen cabin, verandah and associated landscaping.

This workshop will take participants on a cognitive journey through sensory navigation to understand how mind & body work together to create an embodied experience of architectural space and how this can bring more engagement, play & joy into our relationship with the built environment.

The workshop will also lead participants through the research behind the Open Close project that seeks to measure peoples’ emotional connection to four closes of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile that will be transformed into open air sensory galleries in July - August 2017.

Architectural debates are rubbish. We've all been there: a panel of similar speakers with similar views taking it in turns to talk at length about their similar work - too polite, too deferential, too dull. At best they're lukewarm love-ins, critically impotent, elitist and stuffy.

#Turncoats frames things differently. Through provocative opening gambits these free debates will clothesline fundamental issues facing contemporary architecture and society with a playful and combative format designed to ferment open and critical discussion, turning conventional concensus on its head.

In Edinburgh....we'll be debating whether Scotland really is the worst place in Europe to be a young designer. Should graduates leave for greener pastures, or does Scotland have the infrastructure and opportunities to nuture and support emerging talent?

Χώρa [chōra] is a photographic archive of the spaces of London’s Greek-Cypriot diaspora.

This exhibition traces one particular family, that of Yianni & Laoura Tryfonos, who migrated to London from Cyprus in the 1950’s, and the restaurant they managed on City Road. Opened in 1972, 'The City Omelette House' gradually became a hub for the Greek-Cypriot community of North London.

In the face of rising anti-immigrant polemic, the images presented in Χώρa depict a vibrant subculture, centred on a unique group of people who travelled from a small island in the Mediterranean with the same vision of prosperity.

Artist Ally Wallace makes work about architecture and has been visiting Bonnington Power Station to make drawings and video about this impressive Art Deco building, looking at its architecture and function in relation to the surrounding landscape.

As well as showing his videos on a monitor at Civic House, he will run a minibus to take up to 12 people for an official guided tour of the station, followed by a walk to the nearby dam and Falls of Clyde. Participants will also be given a small book of the artist's drawings.

Glaswegians have the right to live in evocative and healthy outdoor spaces by sharing capacities and making civic places collaboratively.

STUDIO POP is developing a unique civic platform called DOT TO DOT© that connects people with local projects “dots” to crowdfund, design, co-develop and ultimately reactivate ecologically derelict places.

Community Architects (Arquitectos de Cabecera _AC) is a methodology born out of an academic project at ETSAB in 2013. Working on the city and focusing on collective housing, the methodology aims to bring closer the figure of the architect to the citizen.

At present, there is a disconnection between academic and public perception of Modern heritage, particularly Brutalist architecture.

Many authorities include 20th century buildings in their listing programmes, but there remains apprehension about protecting anything but the most well preserved icons of the Modern era.

This one-day workshop utilises the processes and experiences of designing and making 3D-printed 'souvenirs of place' from customised building blocks, focusing on the Edinburgh legacy of eponymous architect Sir Basil Spence.

Sam Jacob, Beatrice Galilee and Cath Slessor explore and discuss the infrastructural state of architecture in a world context.

Architecture occurs within a multiplicity of varying contexts, arrangements and expressions. It can be deployed for the greater good and harnessed for singular enrichment. It can be activated to induce joy and utilised to encourage fear. It can be programmed to provide the infrastructural genesis of further activity and applied as final conclusive decoration. 

Sam Jacob - Sam is principal of Sam Jacob Studio for architecture and design. His work spans scales and disciplines ranging from master planning and urban design through to architecture, design and art projects. He was a founding director of FAT Architecture where he was involved in many internationally acclaimed projects. He is also contributing editor for Icon magazine and columnist for both Art Review and Dezeen. He is Professor of Architecture at the University of Illinois at Chicago, visiting Professor at Yale School of Architecture and Director of Night School at the Architectural Association.

Beatrice Galilee - Beatrice is Associate Curator of Architecture & Design at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Previously she was Chief Curator of the 2013 Lisbon Architecture Triennale. She was co-curator at the 2011 Gwangju Design Biennale, 2009 Shenzhen Hong Kong Bi City Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism and curator of the experimental performance design projects Hacked and Afrofuture at Milan Design Week. From 2006-2009 Beatrice was Architecture Editor for Icon Magazine, one of Europe's leading publications in architecture and design. In 2008 she won the IBP Architectural Journalist of the Year Award.

Catherine Slessor MBE - Cath is a leading journalist and critic who has written about architecture for over thirty years. Cath was Editor of the Architectural Review from 2010 until 2015, and previously Deputy Editor. She was Technical Editor at the Architects Journal 1987-1992. Cath continues to write on a freelance basis for publications such as Dezeen, ArchDaily and the Architectural Review. She has recently completed an MA in Architectural History at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London.
